The siren is calling

And who can resist her call when she does?
I sure can't.

I was always a Dunkin Donuts girl. Pfft Starbucks I thought who's going to pay $5 for a cup of coffee?
Then I moved to California where there is a Starbucks on every corner and the closest Dunkin Donuts is in Nevada.
For a year I avoided it always stopping in a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf or a Petes Coffee and Tea instead. Eventually I moved to an area where there was ONLY Starbucks and so finally I gave in to the Sirens call.

Now, I have a registered Starbucks card and have reached Gold level membership. Which means I drank a lot of coffee.
The other day I was sipping my daily Starbucks before work and found myself staring at the iconic Starbucks symbol.
Who is this girl? I thought to myself. What does it mean?

Did you know that the girl on our Starbucks coffee cup is a Mermaid? A Mermaid! A siren of the sea. Those mythical creatures that lured sailors to their watery doom.
Fitting, without the watery doom part.

In 1971 when Starbucks was still new they were searching for the perfect icon to capture the seafaring of coffee and Seattle's seaport roots. Finally, they came across the image of a 16th century Norse woodcut of a twin-tailed mermaid.
It must have been love at first sight otherwise she wouldn't still be around! Changed yes but still the same mermaid she was when they spotted her in 1971.

There's something about the knowledge that my favorite coffee is represented by a Mermaid that makes it a little more special.

Love,
Bunny
